Attendance and return to work

Sickness Absence & Return-to-Work Support

Occupational health input can be useful while an employee is absent as well as when a return is being planned. Early assessment can help clarify barriers, likely timescales and practical support before a return date is reached.

How we can help

  • Assessment while an employee remains absent
  • Functional capability and barriers to return
  • Phased return recommendations where appropriate
  • Temporary workplace adjustments
  • Likely review timescales
  • Advice on when further occupational health input may be useful

Assessment during absence

Where appropriate, occupational health can assess the current functional impact of a health condition, discuss treatment or recovery in broad terms, identify barriers to return and advise whether contact or planning can begin before the employee returns.

Return-to-work planning

Recommendations may include a phased return, temporary changes to duties or hours, review points, workplace adjustments or further management discussion. Advice is tailored to the role and the information available at assessment.

Keeping recommendations proportionate

Occupational health advice supports management decision-making but does not replace the employer’s responsibility to consider operational requirements, risk assessment and applicable employment duties.
